Energy efficient light bulbs keep making their way into the mainstream market. One of the most recent examples is the Pali Momi Medical Center in Hawaii. This facility has replaced about 2300 fluorescents and compact fluorescents with LED technology, reducing their utility bill by over 50%!
While LED lights offer an initial cost much greater than CFLs, their lifetime compensates because of it. LEDs lasts as long as 100,000 hours, compared to compact fluorescents which lasts from 10,000 to 15,000 hours. The higher initial price is usually paid back within the novice of usage, with each consecutive year being pure savings. A spokesperson for the Pali Momi Medical Center expects their investment in LEDs to be returned by savings in around 15 months, while using savings continuing for many years.
